Emanuel Van Mieghem is a Belgian double bass player and composer mainly active in the jazz and improvised music scene.

 

He began playing electric bass at age 15 by teaching himself to play along with records. Shortly after he was admitted at the Kunsthumaniora Brussel to study with Janos Bruneel and Wouter Berlaen. After getting inspired by his double bass teacher Janos Bruneel he starts playing the double bass.

Emanuel obtained a Master of Arts at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2020 with Magna Cum Laude.

During this time he gets the chances to play in the Jaffa Jazz Festival in Tel Aviv, as part of a group with musicians from various European conservatories coached by Tia Fuller (Berklee College of Music) and he gets to perform at the Gent Jazz Festival with ‘Suura’ - an ensemble lead by guitarist and composer Nicolas Van Belle.

He has received classes and workshops from: Jos Machtel, Bart Denolf, Janos Bruneel, Nicolas Thys, Nathan Wouters, Lode Leire, Brice Soniano, Ben Sluijs, Dre Pallemaerts, Frank Vaganee, Kurt Van Herck, Erik Vermeulen, Bo Van Der Werf, Teun Verbruggen, Free Desmyter, Frederik Leroux, Erik Thielemans, ….

 

In 2023 Emanuel wins the ‘Prix de la meilleure composition’ at the Avignon Jazz Festival with his project ‘Mojo Jojo’.

 

Emanuel has performed at Citadelic Festival, Flagey Jazz Festival, Gent Jazz Festival, Brussels Jazz Weekend, Jaffa Jazz Festival, Avignon Jazz Festival, Leuven Jazz Festival, Footprints Jazz Festival, and many other venues and clubs in Europe.

Currently he is based in Brussels and has become a highly in demand bassplayer.
